Summer School

What is the Summer School?

The Postgraduate Summer School is an opportunity for post-graduate students to present their work and receive feedback from a panel of senior Lean Construction academics. This two-day event represents a valuable opportunity for in depth discussions on different research issues, and an opportunity to improve students’ research proposals by providing access to a wealth of experience. Usually it is a 15 minutes presentation of your work followed by a 30 minutes discussion.

Who can participate?*

All postgraduate students that are doing research on Lean Construction and related topics are welcome to take part on the summer school, presenting their work and discussing it with the panel of experts. Students do need to register interest as early as possible, as places are limited to enable sufficient time for in depth discussions.

*Students can also participate as listeners. Acceptance to be a listener will also depend on availability.

How to participate?

Timetable for submission:

- Submission of extended abstracts – 24th May 2013
- Acceptance of extended abstracts and feedback from reviewers – 7th June 2013
- Submission of final version of abstracts (if any changes were made) – 21st June 2013
(Final abstracts will be shared among summer school participants)
- Submission of PowerPoint presentation – One day before summer school

The Summer School is FREE of charge (lunch/coffees provided)

Submission instructions:

If you are interested in participating, please send an extended abstract (maximum 1200 words or 3
pages) to patriciatillmann@berkeley.edu following the recommended guidelines:

2. Purpose of research:

Give both the wider aims of the research and the particular objective(s) that you intend to achieve in the research study. Why are these important and to whom? What is new in the paper? If appropriate, include the hypothesis, research question or practical problem that the investigation addresses.

3. Research method:

How will you deliver your purpose? Describe the research method(s) used. What is the approach to the topic and what theoretical or empirical resources have you drawn on? A flow of research activities should be graphically presented, indicating the main stages and activities of the research project, and learning cycles.

4. Preliminary findings:

In case you have preliminary findings, please include results, analysis, and discussion.

5. Implications:

What are the contributions to knowledge or practice expected from the investigation? Are there changes to practice that should be made as a result of this research? What are the main theoretical implications? How should it influence attitudes in the industry, or public at large? Does it suggest changes in government or industry policy? Will it affect quality of life? Include also any identified limitations in the research process and suggestions for future research.
